OUR CITY - OUR NEIGHBORHOOD

Known as Azalea City, Valdosta is located in the south-central portion of the State of Georgia, the heart of the county seat of Lowndes County.  With 511 square miles, the county boasts a population county-wide of 118,250 as of the 2020 census. Only 22 miles from Florida’s northern border, Lowndes County is a major commerical, educational, and manufacturing center with considerable forest products.  A part of the 13,000-acre wetlands known as Grand Bay is located in Lowndes County.  County demarcation lines run along and through the Withlacoochee River sub-basin of the Suwannee River basin.

Valdosta has a vibrant community spirit and a thriving cultural scene, as well as its historic landmarks and outdoor recreational opportunities.  Holding the title “Winnersville” due to its highly successful high school and college sports teams, Friday Night Lights are BIG here!  The whole city turns out for the annual Winnersville Classic between the Valdosta HS Wildcats and Lowndes HS Vikings.

The Azalea Festival is held every March to celebrate the beautiful azaleas that grace our City far and wide. With local music and food, arts and crafts, dancing and displays, its a fun way to celebrate Spring. Wild Adventures also hosts multiple musical and comedic artists in its outside amphitheater throughout the year. Seasonal events like Easter Eggstravaganza, Celebrate America Festival, Wild Food Weekend, Great Pumpkin LumiNights and Christmas Wild & Bright are sure to please.
Part of Valdosta State University, the Dedo Maranville Fine Arts Gallery exhibits student and national artists. The Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts is also a great place to partake of the various classes available to the public. Its gallery showcases the talents of our local artists througout the year. Peach State Summer Theatre, 'Dosta Playhouse and The Performing Arts Center are a must if you are a thespian at heart.
Whatever your choice in cuisine, you'll find Valdosta has some of the best dining experiences around. Fin & Feathers is "Nu American Soul" flair. If surf & turf appeals to you, try Austin's Cattle Co. Smok'n Pig is always a hit if you want Southern BBQ. Want something a little different? Try 306 North, The Bistro, Giulio's Greek & Italian and Friends Grille and Bar. Or, just sit back and relax at Georgia Beer Co. Bon appetit!
A stately landmark in the heart of downtown Valdosta, the county's former courthouse was built c. 1905 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Used today for meetings, events and other civic purposes, the building is widely acknowledged as one of Georgia's most beautiful county courthouses. Visit the Lowndes County Historical Society and Museum to learn more about our great city. Fun fact: John Henry "Doc" Holliday, the legendary western gunfighter and gambler, was born in Valdosta.
South of the city, Wild Adventures Theme Park is home to exotic animals, six roller coasters, various thrill rides, an arcade, Discovery Outpost, Safari Campground and Splash Island water park. Try your hand at putt-putt or strap on some skates at Jungle Jym's Family Fun Center. Test your critical thinking skills at Epic Escape Rooms; or, jump and flip to your hearts desire at Recoil Trampoline Park.
Hop over to Studio Imagination and choose from a variety of ceramics to paint, make a pinch-pot creation or join one of the evening Paint n' Sip parties occuring year-round. Visit Grand Bay Wildlife Management Area and hike the 2,600 ft wooden walkway to the old fire tower; or, spend some time on Banks Lake National Wildlife Refuge kayaking. If golfing is your game, you want to visit each of the three beautiful golf courses within our city.
